British universities going over candidates’ application starting sensing something strange.  It seems that a lot of applicants mentioned "burning a hole in pajamas at age eight" in the personal statement portion of their applications.

What could account for such a bizarre concurrence of incidents?

Elementary.  They’re all plagiarizing their applications from the Internet.
